Landfill Reclamation

Landfill reclamation is the process whereby a landfill is excavated to recover materials to produce refuse-derived, Low-Carbon Fuel, and reclaim the site by extracting the materials currently buried in the landfill.

Landfill Reclamation has occurred in Calgary when the City reclaimed a portion of the Highfield Landfill and successfully repurposed the site. ECCO‘s project builds on this by adding the production of Low-Carbon Fuel in their on-site facility.

ECCO is proposing to recover the existing materials from the Construction and Demolition landfill, process them onsite to produce Low-Carbon Fuel, and transport the LCF for use offsite.

The following is an overview of the Landfill Reclamation process:

  • Remove cover soils and clay cap, stockpiling the soil types separately for reuse. The soil previously used to cover individual waste cells will be reclaimed for reuse throughout the process.

  • Excavate to remove viable materials such as wood, shingles, and plastics. The excavator will pre-sort materials during the excavation process to remove materials such as metal or concrete for recycling by a local third-party recycler.

  • Load material into rock trucks for transport to a trommel and conveyor system for additional sorting and processing.

  • Viable materials coming off the conveyer will be trucked down from the landfill to the MRF for processing into Low-Carbon Fuel.
